    Memory Leak?

Hi All - I am running SuSe 11.3 on a Dell Precision T7500n Dual Six Core Processor workstation. The machine has 12GB memory. Here is the result of free -m when nothing is running:

total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 12036 6696 5339 0 245 5567
    -/+ buffers/cache: 884 11152
    Swap: 26370 3 26367

Why is half my memory (7GB) being consumed by the OS. Is the cached memory accessible to my other processes, in addition to the "free" memory?
