OS replacement walk through
I was just wondering if some one could post or send me a link how to install OpenSUSE over my old OS, its an old windows 98.
Also I was wondering how much space it takes to install because I have a very limited amount of space to work with (only 20 gigs), but i got another 300some hard drive that i was wondering if there is any way I can fit the OS in that. I should also add Im pretty new to these sorts of things just as a heads up

Here is a walk through for Open Suse Gnome Desktop Install. I am presuming you are going to download and install a lighter Open Suse Desktop iso for your Windows 98 Laptop because of your other thread. The installer should be the same though.

Thanks so much for this, its just what I needed
Is there any way I can fit the OS on the 300mb hard drive(forgot to say the size my last post), its not a big deal if I cant. Also online it says it runs off 128mb of ram, is this true because i cant get it to work in a virtual machine with that little ram. Once again not a big deal if it cant my 512 stick of ram is now needed to run a 3rd comp so its just a temporary problem
- 06-18-2011 #4Roky is smiling now close to giggling. I have not ran Open Suse since version 6. Pretty sure the ISO download for CD is bigger that 300MB. So no. It won't fit. You'll need the whole 20 gig hardrive IMO. I run AntiX on 16 gigs and / after dist-upgrade sit's at over 2 gigs.Is there any way I can fit the OS on the 300mb hard drive
On my Asus 900 with 4gig Solid State Drive and 16 gig secondary solid state drive. I have deleted all the manuals, locales other than usa plus other tweaks to keep my 4gig / partition at just under 2 gigs. My /home sits on secondary 16 gig SSD drive symlinked to / and /etc/fstab tweaked to be recognized by /. (all gibberish to you I know)
AntiX runs lighter applications than Open Suse from what I gather.
You'll need the whole 512MB of ram also and some swap for good measure. Just my opinion though.Linux Registered User # 475019

Yeah, what ever you said makes my head hurt to even look at it o.O
But like I said these things are no big deals. I got a 200gb ata hard drive but for some reason i cant get it to work
(none of my Mother Boards detects it T_T) I know this isnt the place to ask but do you have any idea why?
But thanks for all the help you and the rest of the people have given me, hopefully Ill have this thin up and running soon
- 06-18-2011 #6Can you hear it spin up when power is applied to it? If not. It is toast. Goggle Ultimate Boot CD or Parted Magic. They both have good software tools for checking, and software fixes for ailing hard drives. If it don't spin up though. It's target practice material.I got a 200gb ata hard drive but for some reason i cant get it to workLinux Registered User # 475019
