Libre Office, space wasted

I have a new Suse Linux 11.4 system, and with it a brand new
Libre Office. When I activate it, of the about 26 cm window
width, almost 10 cm are taken up by a grey area to the left
and right of the central panel with the text. This forces the
text to a smaller representation on the screen.

Can I get rid of these grey panels and thus maximise the
working area?
