starting up computer wont start up desktop

I've installed Suse 9.1 and Windows XP home on my system, and they worked fine. But since a few days the linux startup won't start the desktop environment.
Suse is being started, and using Ctrl+Alt+F1 I can log on and do some things and log off and so, but the Desktop with the windows and everything just won't start.

Does anyone have any idea on what might have caused this?

    my system:
    Amd sempron 2800+
    192 mb ram
    80GB hd:
    28.3 gb Windows partition
    4.0 gb Windows Recovery partition
    31.2 gb Files partition
    10 gb Suse partition

make sure you have the runlevel set to 5, you can change it, by logging in to GUI, going to YaST, and changing the runlevel there.

To enter GUI, login and then type
    Code:
    startx

thanks for the advice, but it doesn't work.

If I send the startx command, I get a black screen. If I return to the command line, I see this:
xauth: creating new authority file /root/.Xauthority

    Gotta love those lines

    Can you please post your
    VideoCard Name/Model
    Monitor Name/Model
AND most important your XF86Config-4 file (remove all #commented lines)

IF you want to knwo why, heres an explanation that may help you fix this yourself. Cannot find Suitable Mode... This "usually" meen that no mode are supported by the videoCard / Monitor(sometimes)
    This refers to :
    • resolution (1280 x 1024)
      scanning frequency (30-81 KHz)
      horizontal and vertical (56-75)

these setting are easely found in your /etc/X11/XF86Config file.. it could also be XF86Config, xorg.conf. xorg.conf usually have a link that points to either one of those two file...

If you want to go ahead, try to look at the settings in this file and play around with it, its the best way to learn...

If ever you are lost or need further help, dont hesitate to hit us back with the informations I've asked you and it'll be a pleasure

A friend advised me to do the following:

    1) go to runlevel 3
    Code:
    telinit 3
    2) reconfigure the monitor
    Code:
    sax2
    3) reboot
    Code:
    shutdown -r 0
    This did the trick!

Thanks for the interest and advice anyway!
