It says authentication successful, but then kicks me out. Any idea what is going wrong?
What does /var/log/messages (on the server side) say about this?...

What does /var/log/messages (on the server side) say about this?It says authentication successful, but then kicks me out. Any idea what is going wrong?

PasswordAuthentication field needs to be changed
Just change the PasswordAuthentication field in the file from no to yes and it will work with PuTTY. If you are using an openssh client then this field need not be changed. Although I can't figure out why..
