Is there a slave drive on the primary cable?

If not there are three possible causes of the problem: 1 - Drive is faulty, 2 - IDE controller is not properly recognized by SuSE or isn't capable of Ultra DMA mode, and 3 - cable is bad/not correct type (needs to be 80 pin conductor).

That would be the first thing I would try, I have seen cables go bad.
