my usb drive is not working

i have a usb dirve/stick that does not work when i plug it in. I had one that worked but i lost it, so i bought another one of the same brand but of the 512 mb variety.

The usb port is working because other devices work when pluged in.

The box that the sick came in even said that it was compatable with linux kerrnel 2.4 and up.

The computer doesnt even react when i plug it in

and i am using suse 9.2

any help would be greatly appreciated

I would open a terminal (e.g. Konsole) and then right after inserting the memory stick run the command dmesg. This will give you an idea of any problems, as this will include messages from any device detection. Can you post back your results here?

yes type on dmesg and search for your usb device

then try to mount it manually doing

#mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt

assuming your device is /dev/sda1

try this, goto /mnt and make a directory there called usb. now do the following as root in the command line:

kate /etc/fstab

replace kate with favourite text editor e.g. gedit, kwrite, vi, emacs etc...

now add this line to it:

/dev/sde1 /mnt/usb vfat  rw,users,gid=users,umask=0002,nls=utf8 0 0

save it and quit your editor, now in the command line do this to mount the drive:

mount /mnt/usb

and do this once finished using the device:

umount /mnt/usb
