Apache Server, PHP, and sending mail

Hi, I have an Open Suse 10 command line server, running apache2, MySQL and PHP. My PHP applications (such as wordpress) want to send email's to registering users. The emails are not going out. Do I need an email program on the server or is this an issue with the php application ?

    Thanks,

I don't normally bump my own thread, but now someone else is asking the same thing. Surely this is an easy problem to solve?

    Thanks

    Hi,

I am not sure if i know what your trying to do exactly ... are you looking for an autoresponder? or a mailing list manager? ... or just looking to get a certain application to work?

Here are some links to mailing list managers and mailers ... i didn't include autoresponders since they are targets and producers of spam ... but if that's what your after a google search for autoresponders will turn up quite a few.

    ---------------------------------------------

    PHPMailer
    http://freshmeat.net/projects/phpmailer/

PHPMailer is an email transport class which features multiple file attachments, CCs, BCCs, REPLY-TOs, HTML messages, redundant SMTP servers, and word wrap, among others. It can send email via sendmail, PHP mail(), or with SMTP. Methods are based on the popular AspEmail active server component.

    MIME Email message class
    http://freshmeat.net/projects/mimemessageclass/

The MIME Email message class composes and sends MIME encoded email messages. It features user-definable headers and body parts, support for plain text and HTML body, headers with non-ASCII text, HTML messages with embedded images, file attachments with content type detection, forwarding of messages as attachments, setting the error delivery address with the Return-Path header, and sub-classes for different delivery methods: mail, SMTP, Qmail, Sendmail, and Microsoft IIS or Exchange pickup folder. It also supports sending personalized bulk mail by replacing the message parts that differ for each recipient.

    Mailing list managers

    Sendmail
    http://www.sendmail.org/

Sendmail's job is to accept mail from Mail User Agents (MUA) and deliver it to the appropriate mailer as defined by its configuration file. sendmail can also accept network connections and deliver mail to local mailboxes or deliver it to another program.

    -------------------------------------------

As far as Wordpress goes ... not sending email seems to be a commom problem:

    Smile Suse and emails

No its not that easy since you give no useful information. What email server are
you sending the emails to e.g. Postfix/Sendmail. Look in the error logs, look at the
mail queue and you will see why the emails aren't being delivered. Are these
emails to internet email addresses, if so you need to set up your email server
    with an external relay address.

Meanwhile I think I am a little bit further. I guess I have to use "transfer mail agent" in Yast to set this email server up. Right? Unfortunately it rejects my Gmail account. Somebody who solved this already?
