    Exclamation Suse 9.1 Java Upgrade

    The URL that I used for the instructions is as follows:

    http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/11231.html

    STEPS TAKEN - Using the instructions from the above URL I performed the following steps:1. downloaded the j2sdk1.4.2_11 installation binary to my system.
    2. created a conf file in /etc/java (SUNjava142-11.conf):

    Priority: 20

    Vendor : Sun
    Version : 1.4.2_11
    Devel : True

    JAVA_BINDIR = /usr/lib/j2sdk1.4.2_11/bin
    JAVA_ROOT = /usr/lib/j2sdk1.4.2_11
    JAVA_HOME = /usr/lib/j2sdk1.4.2_11
    JRE_HOME = /usr/lib/j2sdk1.4.2_11/jre
    JDK_HOME = /usr/lib/j2sdk1.4.2_11
    SDK_HOME = /usr/lib/j2sdk1.4.2_11
    JAVA_LINK = SUNjava142-11

    3.
    $ chmod +x j2sdk-1_4_2_11-linux-i586.bin
    $ cd /usr/lib
    $ ~/install/j2sdk-1_4_2_11-linux-i586.bin
    $ ls -l j2sdk1.4.2_11:

    4. Rebooted system - log back in.
    5. Check the release of Java on the sytem:

    $ java -version
    java version "1.4.2_03"
    Java™ 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_03-b02)
    Java HotSpot™ Client VM (build 1.4.2_03-b02, mixed mode)

    __________________________________________________ ______________

    What am I missing? Why isn't the system being updated to the new release of Java? I have read and reread the instructions. Perhaps another set of eyes will see what I'm doing wrong.

    Thanks!

    You have to update your path variables.

    I use tcsh so I just edited '/etc/profile.d/alljava.csh' and replaced all the directory names with the new Java install location.
