HP Omnibook Display Issue
First time poster and relative linux newbie, hopefully someone can help.
I'm trying to install Suse 10.0 on a recently-acquired HP Omnibook 6000 notebook with a 15" display. I selected Gnome as my GUI. After the installation process is complete and the system is rebooted (I think I left the screen resolution at the default of 800x600 during the initial acceptance of configuration settings), I get this very annoying half inch horizontal white band about an inch down from the top of the screen.
I've searched for other posts about this problem and found a couple with no resolution: http://groups.google.com/group/novel...162ff762e810ea
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/sus...=omnibook+6000
Now, I have gone in to SaX2 and set my screen resolution to 1400x1050 which someone mentioned was the native for this screen size. Under -->Vesa for my monitor, there is not an option for1400x1050 (I swear there was initially, but now it's gone after following the instructions in one of the posts I listed above). Anyway, I'm going with -->LCD 1400x1050 60hz for my monitor selection. Net result, annoying white band is still there. I've tried several other monitor selections, all to no avail.
Here is the strange thing. When I click on the 'Test' button to test out the changes, I get this window with a dialog box titled "XFine2" and arrows for adjusting the screen. At the lower part of that dialog box are the words "Screen [0]: 1024x768 @ 48Khz : 60 Hz". This indicates to me that the SaX2 changes aren't really being applied, even
though the SaX2 window states that my Resolution is 1400x1050 (and I've rebooted a couple times with this value). Kind of like my resolution is being set for me, despite what I've configured. If I switch to some low resolution setting, e.g. 1024x768 or 800x600, same problem but at lower resolution.
If anybody has some ideas out there, I'd REALLY like to get SUSE running correctly on this notebook. I've tried on another Omnibook with a 14" screen, and after installing the screen just goes blank when Suse linux comes up after reboot, so I've written off Suse entirely for that notebook. Seems to be some issues there with Suse and Omnibook 6000 display hardware. So far Suse is the only build I can find that will run my wireless card well (Atheros based), which is why I want to go with it. MadWifi instructions were not accurate enough to be a quick solution using FC5 or Mandriva, so Suse it is! I hope. If not, then I'll have to go with another version of linux and dig into the wireless rats nest (ndiswrapper, blah blah, let's not got into that mess here).
Thanks.

Given that this notebook has an ATI card, you should select "ATI" as your driver instead of "VESA". See the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf to make the changes.
Here is an example for /etc/X11/xorg.conf on the same notebook (actually it is a /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, but it is very similar) :
http://www.swiss.ai.mit.edu/projects...4-1400x1050-as"To express yourself in freedom, you must die to everything of yesterday. From the 'old', you derive security; from the 'new', you gain the flow."

My xorg.conf file contents
The last monitor I tried is shown... My driver, if that's what is listed below, is somewhat different from the one shown in the sample xorg.conf file for which you provided a link ("3D Rage P/M Mobility AGP 2x" vs. "ATI|Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x"); however, I have no idea how to go about changing it. When I open the SaX utility, the button corresponding to the driver is labeled 'Options' and won't allow me to select a different driver. Is this something that I can do on a command line? Thanks for the help with this !!

Can you post the output of
?Code:cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE

Hope I did this correctly...
Thanks again for the help! Output was brief, but I'm not sure what's expected...
linux:/ # cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.

From the console, does
work?Code:startx

Newbie question
okay, if I run 'startx' I get a fatal error that the server is already running. I'm guessing you'd like me to do this before the Gnome GUI is up an running, or get out of Gnome and run it from a prompt, yes? I'm not sure how to quit out of Gnome without shutting the laptop all the way down or how to interrupt the start of Gnome during bootup...
Thanks
- 06-08-2006 #8Ok then. Sorry. Then backup your existing /etc/X11/xorg.conf file before we try anything else.

Try to run Sax 2 again and choose a different monitor, more appropriate."To express yourself in freedom, you must die to everything of yesterday. From the 'old', you derive security; from the 'new', you gain the flow."

Okay, backup made
Sorry for the delay in responding. I've made the file backup per your suggestion. I think you were initially on the right track with the driver. Just for grins, I ran Knoppix (ver 3.9) to check the name of its display driver (which works absolutely fine with this notebook), and it used a driver very similar in name to that shown in the link that you provided (
http://www.swiss.ai.mit.edu/projects...4-1400x1050-as). It was something like 'Rage Mobility PM AGP 2x." I'm wondering if the "3D" version of this driver which installs with Suse is problematic for the Omnibook 6000. Just guessing that it's a new version of the driver. I can't figure out how to change drivers, though. SaX2 won't let me do it, and I even tried reinstalling Suse but didn't have an option to change the driver that it 'automagically' selected during the installation, only the ability to select a different monitor or resolution. I am reposting the contents of the xorg.conf file since I reinstalled the OS last night...
