Error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH

Im not sure if i am doing this right. I'm trying to compile these source code for xawtv inorder to install the program. The xawtv file was a tar.gz extension so I extracted it , opened a terminal and typed ./configure then i got the msg "Error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH" and it checked for gcc, cc, cl and had no beside each of them. I just thought that SUSE would have everything setup so stupid ppl like me wont have to worry about complicated situations. Can someone help me plz

do an 'echo $PATH',if the list of paths does not contain the the dir where your
gcc is installed to, set up $PATH(if it is already installed)
If not install the gcc package for your distro.
