I'm having a similar "hanging" problem to yours. I'm also relatively brand new to Linux, coming over from Windows... not cause I think it's better, but for a plethora of personal and "political" reasons.

I had the problem either when running a VNC viewer back to a Windows virtual machine or when running KTorrent. Once I got a message from KTorrent about too many open files, but I sort of just ignored it. The hanging also only happens for me when I'm not using the computer, although it does happen sometimes when I'm actively clicking in a VNC session.

I don't need to have my firewall enabled on my system, so I went and disabled it in:
/etc/sysconfig/network/config
As long as that's the only place I have to disable it, I'm going to see if leaving it disabled on my system helps.

My hardware is an IBM Thinkpad T60, 1.5GB RAM, 1.83GHz Core Duo, 14.1". It's the 2623-D6U in case anyone wants to compare/contrast. I am using the wireless interface right now, but it has hung using the E1000 as well.

i still haven't located the problem. the firewall didnt seem to be it, after disabling it for a while it frioze again. im running a wireless modem aswell with ndiswrapper, now im wondering if this isnt the problem since i see you are running a wireless aswell, are you using ndiswrapper?

okay i see you mention a E1000, i take it thats not wireless?.. bummer, maybe we can try and locate the problem together.. i notice that it definitely has to do with downloads.. but it also happens when im not downloading, but less often.

The e1000 is native Linux, it's the Intel Pro1000/MT Desktop adapter integrated on the Thinkpad motherboard. My Wireless is also Intel-based and is not using ndiswrapper, it is running the ipw3945 driver for Linux from Intel.

Since disabling my firewall earlier today, I haven't had a hang. I also haven't left the system sit as long as I usually do when it does hang.

It's interesting, my numlock still toggles when it's hung, though, which is strange, because the rest of the system is completely non-responsive.

I've read a lot about the ATI drivers not handling power management/throttling, also about SATA drivers not doing well.

Do you have SATA and/or ATI video?

yup, i have sata, no ati though, nvidia. i'll try and disable my firewall again this evening and see what happens. im hoping yours still hasn't frozen.

It was either your hopes, or the firewall. I didn't freeze last night for the time since I installed. So, it's now been about 15 hours of uptime.

I should note that in my boot there used to be stuff about firewall not compatible with ipv6 something or something (I don't know how to look at messages after boot time) and some part of ipv6 being disabled. I don't know if I still get that message because I haven't rebooted since disabling the firewall in the config file I mentioned in an earlier post and running:
rcnetwork restart

I'll post again later. Let me know if you disabled it and if you've gotten any sort of uptime from it.

I can confirm that this bug is related to wireless internet access and is also afecting Ubuntu. I'm running Edgy Eft and started having this problem 10 days ago when I changed my internet provider from Ethernet Cable Modem to Wireless ADSL Router. As soon as I start a torrent download my system freezes completely.

did you get the problem fixed.
I have changed the role of my two network cards(wireless) and i have had uptime now of 10 days.. straight eegee.

My external wireless card(usb) was interfaced by ndiswrapper and the internal had linux drivers. now that i have them swapped i have no problems(except for bad reception from the rt2500 card.. but its better than the freezing.

i also had problems after this where my computer would freeze on boot, something to do with ndiswrapper... after instralling 1.35 i have had no problems whatsoever.

hopefully you guys are sorted too.. i would love to swap the role of my devices back top normal though.
