with all due respect Casper he only wanted 2 OS's in his original post.
King X ..follow caspers direction to disk management. It's there trust us.
It's just not quite so obvious.
Good luck

Hi bigfilsing !!
you are right... KingX is going for two OS only and your suggestion will work fine in this case...
actually i used the same way a few months earlier... that time i had only Xp and FC5... when i tried to install SuSe, i ran into problems... windows recognize only two Bootable primary partitions, we can force it for four primary partitions...
but after that..... we can't create any new partition.....
so... now i have only one primary partition ( windows in it )...
one BIG extended partition
6 logical partitions in this extended partition....... 5 linux distros + swap

Ah Casper ...just the man i need. Aside from the question how the hell did you install 5 distros ( and not go mad)
I am a long time computer users ( 1973 terminal with punch tape ...don't ask) and have been looking at Linux for a while but only just got round to installing it.
I've put it on my old P4 as a clean install so no fun and games with partitions. I find it very frustrating that to get anything to work involves a lot of research and hours of trial and error. Even though i have a reasonable insight into PC's. Just getting Suse 10.1 to work is a complete pain. What with chaneels and dependancies and and. Having to install Smart cos Yast is terrible.
Here's my question.
Which do you prefer Suse 10.1 or FC 5 and why??
Don't get me wrong i love the concept of Open source and Linux I am just frustrated that i seem to spend so much time getting it to work than i do using the programs.
In SUse 10.1 ...do you use Yast for software installation or Smart??
How can i put a Smart icon on the desk top?? ( thats how new to Linux i am)??
Cheers

How many distros i can install in Harddisk? depends only on HardDisk size...
i have 80GB disk so i can't install more than 5-6 distros + windows Xp...
first primary partition, hda1 12 GB... windows xp. its C: drive.
second Extended Partition hda2.... rest of disk space....
first Logical Partition in Extended Partition...hda5, 10 GB, FAT32 for data sharing... its D: drive.
rest space is unpartitioned/free in Extended Partition...
install any distro, select unpartitioned/free space... let it propose partition structure.... dont accept, click back and create manually... 12 GB root, 650 MB SWAP.... nothing to do in Boot Loader section, dual boot is default...
hda6 Ububtu
hda7 SWAP
now a lot of free space left
install next distro, same steps, dont create new SWAP, use existing, ( this time i created 8GB root partition) nothing to do in Boot Loader section, all distros use GRUB by default and it recognize existing distro.....
install other distros, until whole free space not consumed....

Thanks for the reply Casper.
The reason i asked is that i've now got the stage where i'm about to wipe the hard disk and start again. I messed around so much i'm not even sure what i've changed anymore . All part of the learning curve.
I'm temtped to pop down the shops and buy a released version of Suse or Redhat. ( i've been using open suse 10.1 that i downloaded).
I'm pretty impressed with SUse in as much as they offer a pretty complete set up inc some basic but good applications. It's just the YAST software update thing that sucks. Is redhat any better.???
Are redhat and FC5 one and the same thing? ( Stupid wuestion but i've never really found a clear answer)
My goal is a media type machine ..video and audio editing
Cinelerra is on my list of "want to use" applications.
I think i might buy redhat and install it along side Suse.
Couple of questions more.
Can one screw the other up?
Yopu mentioned disabling services in the back ground. How do i find out what s running in the background and disable them.??
Thanks
- 09-15-2006 #17XP disk management allows you to create partitions in unused disk space but to resize a partition you need to convert it to a dynamic disk (XP Pro only) which I'm not sure can even be used with linux (I'd be interested to find out if anyone knows).

- 09-15-2006 #19RH4 is very very old and RED HAT dont provide any support for it now. i heard that RH5 is out or will be out very soon. Fedora is sponsered by RED HAt and supported by Fedora Community. its like a testing distro for RH. new version released after every 6 months. check About FedoraIs redhat any better.???

No. you can share data and almost everything between two distros... now it depends what you do with the system files of other distro. Can one screw the other up?
i am in Ubuntu box right now so cant point you to exact location. in yast, look for System Services, ...hmmm... let me check SuSe box. i will post back soon...Yopu mentioned disabling services in the back ground. How do i find out what s running in the background and disable them.??
