HELP! Upgrade to Suse 10.1 and I can't boot up!
I'm somewhat familiar with Suse Linux but I generally use a GUI to get things done. I started with Suse 10 earlier this year. I found similiar issues with google, but none quite the same so I'm not sure what the right way to go is.
I just upgraded to Suse 10.1 and encountered this error immediately on boot up.
Grub loading Stage 1.5
Error 18
In rebooting the computer a number of times, one of the boot attempts worked and the upgrade completed. I was able to work with the computer until I did a reboot. The Grub loading error came up again and I can't get it to boot at all.
I'm running a Dell P800 with a 160GB HD and 384M ram. I thinks there's a small partition for the Linux OS stuff (I went with the recommended when I first installed) and the rest is a single partition. This hard drive has all my files on it so I want to keep them intact.
I have a second smaller hard drive with Suse 10 that will boot and is allowing me to make this help request. I don't have a boot disk other than the install disks for Suse.
BIG THANKS IN ADVANCE for any help you can give me on this!

Try to boot your PC from live CD. Mount your system root to /mnt folder of live cd. CD to this folder. And run grub-install to reinstall the grub stage1 to your MBR.

boot from SuSe 10.1 installation CD and select installation. in next screen, select 'upgrade'. dont select any new package. it will install GRUB again.
casperIt is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Won't upgrade...
I don't have a CD boot disk so I did the Installation again. Seemed to be going fine until this error came up:

choosing continue, it then gave me this error:
Partitions could not be mounted.
Check the log file /var/log/YaST/y2log.
Followed by:
ERROR
Failed to mount target system
This bumped me into a Bright blue screen with a red box with the text:
Linux v2.0.46 (Kernel 2.6.16.21-0.25-default)
An error occurred during the installation.
[Okay]
I then get an option list of:
Settings
System Information
Kernel Module (Hardware Drivers)
Verify Installation CD
Eject CD
Exit or Reboot
Power off
At this point, I'm clueless. Is there something here that can help me or do I need to get out and try something all together different. I'm responding from work, so my system is likely still sitting on this screen at home.
This stuff is such a hassle - you're help is much appreciated!
