Is the BIOS boot order correct? first cd-rom then hard drive? You usually need to hit f9 or del during boot

in Old machines, sometimes SuSe dont recognize machine's hardware. when it flashes message 'No Harddisk/Cd drive' found, press 'Esc' key and load 'Generic IDE modules' in Modules section.

Upgrade BIOS.
after CD detection faliure, installer drops you in Manual Installation Mode. did you select 'Generic Modules' in Manual Mode? it should recognize CD after loading that module.

Is the CD bootable? Did you burn the image correctly? Try re-downloading the ISO, verify it, then burn a new cd.

when you try to install SuSe, it throws an error and drops you on 'Manual Installation' mode. on this screen select Load Modules --> IDE --> ide-generic. Leave the parameters field blank. go back and resume installation. installer will detect CDDriver and start installation process.
when Suse reboots after install, it has to boot through the installed system, but again it wont find the hard disk. so, again go to rescue and load the module.... boot the installed system. your installation will be complete.
now you have to add the ide-generic module to the initrd so that you dont have to load it manually, each time you reboot.
first try this and install SuSe. let me know if it works. i will post the instruction for adding 'ide-generic' module to the initrd. this method always worked.
