10.1 new install, unable to log into Samba

First, everything was working using Samba on Suse 10.1 on another computer. I could log in with my Windows XP computer with no problem.
I then got a new computer just for Linux and did a new install of Suse 10.1 (twice infact).
Now with this new install I can not log into Samba (still using the same XP computer). XP sees the Linux computer and the share of a user that I created. The share is enabled. When I enter the user name and password from XP, the login window comes back. It does the same thing as when you enter an invalid password on a working system. But the user name and password are correct.
I can not go to the other computer to see how it was setup as I'm using the disk that held the Linux OS from the old computer for the new computer.

Does anybody have an idea as to where to start?
    Thanks in advance

    Did I forget

OK, I did two things to get this to work.
I swear, I don't remember doing this before.

First I went into Samba conf (via YaSt) and set the value for the smbpasswd file. For some reason, the value was blank.

    Restarted Smaba

Second I did the following command from a shell window:
    smbpasswd -a user_name

Now I can log on via my XP computer.
