Lost sound 10.1
After banging on thing to get a XGL problem resolved I seem to have messed up the sound system. It is very odd some apps work some don't
Some Things that work
KDE destop sounds
amoraK
Kaffeine
Things that don't
Skype 1.3.0.53 (note was working now not)
Banshee
JuK (runs but no sound)
FireFox (note was working now not)
Note alsa is installed
note none work with alsa not installed I think it is some kind of problem in the dev/dsp setup
Where to start???
Need to get Skype working again
SuSE 10.1 Abit KN8-SLI mother board 2Gig GF 6800 XT vidio
running
gogalthorp@Linux1:/dev> artsdsp -m skype
ALSA lib pcm_direct.c:224:(make_local_socket) connect failed: ?Z/tmp/alsa-dmix-6153-1160357734-395483: No such file or directory
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:895:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to connect client
I get these errors There several files(?) in tmp with this format but different numbers They appear to have proper permissions. Don't know what the funny character-Z means
Yes alsa-dmix is installed
It should not be needed to run artsdsp, I had Skype working (before my troubles wi GL) just fine. The older version 1.2.xxx ran ok with just dev/dsp but sometimes would give a sound error on the second usage. Stoping and restarting corrected the problem. Skype says 1.3.xxxx fixes this and now uses alsa. I ran the beta for a short time before the troubles, but now nothing, no version works all give me the "Problem with Sound device" error
Running alsaconfig unconfigs the sound dirver ( at least according to Yast). Should I leave it unconfiged??? will a reboot config it requiring me to again alsaconfig???
With out anything else to try I deleted all the alsa-dmix-XXXXXXXXXX files
ALSA lib pcm_direct.c:224:(make_local_socket) connect failed: Z/tmp/alsa-dmix-6153-1160357734-395483: No such file or directory
I would think sockets would be recreated as needed and it is the tmp directory. Now ALL sound is hosed.
Alsaconf runs and makes sound and created a new socket file in the tmp directory but nothing else does.
I did a complete reinstall of 10.1 ( ok keeped my home partition but wiped root)
Sounds work in KDE, Amarok, Caffine. ( have not tested others) Mixer settings correct
Sounds from alsaconf and Yast sound config and KDE sound configure
I still get
ALSA lib pcm_direct.c:224:(make_local_socket) connect failed: Z/tmp/alsa-dmix-24428-1160935088-387196: No such file or directory
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:895:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to connect client
Errors and no connection. Skype ran from the command line under user
Note Skype worked fine ver 1.2 and last 1.3 beta but I hosed things when uninstalling XGL.
What would keep skype from creating a socket????
Since I replaced all of root. It has to be somewhere in one of the .Config files in my home directory??????
Ok back to basics . Am I wrong or shouldn't this work
gogalthorp@linux1:~/Sounds> cat STARTUP.WAV >/dev/dsp
bash: /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy
gogalthorp@linux1:~/Sounds>
Could it be that some process is capturing the dsp and not releasing it? If so how to find said process?? Anyone??
All above posted on Skype and Suse boards without any help
Thanks

Could someone please run this test for me on a 10.1 preferably 64 bit system that has a fully functional sound system with alsa installed and post the results
gogalthorp@linux1:~/Sounds> cat somewave.WAV >/dev/dsp
thanks

Hey,
Not sure how much help this will be to you, but my sound system works fine under ALSA on Skype, Amarok, Firefox etc, however when I ran cat STARTUP.WAV> /dev/dsp
I too got,
bash: /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy, while nothing was playing
strange......

each time skype trys to do something sound wise
note the referenced file does exist. Also note that this is a socket and I'd think that a new socket would be created for each sound process rather then try to reuse one that an other process might be using. Is there any way to see what process is currently using a socket??
So it looks like there is something wrong in dmix. It seems to only effect 32 bit apps.
Skype is definitly using the 32 bit libs.
Also note this was all working at one time something went south. But finding that something is a bear
Any help much needed
Thanks

Rather obvious suggestion would be to think if you have done any package updates since everything started to go bad, if not check your repos for updated versions of alsa? maybe its got corrupted along the way? hard to see why it should be its always worth a try

Will give it a shot again
