    Telewest Broadband

I am getting telewest's broadband service installed next week.

From the looks of forums this will not be a problem at my end, however telewest suggest they will only install to machines that meet their criteria and only windows and mac os does this.

Has anyone on here had experience from this and got telewest to install to a machine running linux or will i need to downgrade to windows for the purposes of installation and then try and get it running on suse?

You could always install it yourself but make sure you connect through ethernet and not usb.

As long as there is no client end software you should be fine. If they just install a router/modem it shouldn't matter. Think of it this way - a lot of people get broadband for online gaming through their Xbox/Playstation.

They probably only list certain supported platforms but ultimately you are a paying customer, and the end client is irrelevent. I have use BT and Eircom and neither support Linux, but there are no problems in using it.

My intention is to connect through ethernet as this from what I can gather will work no problems.

My question is to whether telewest will provide me the equipment to do this still though I am not running an OS they support. As long as they connect the broadband and supply the ethernet cable modem I am ok but I am not sure they will do this if I dont run windows.

If need be I have 2 blank HDD so I can install windows on one of them for installation and then revert to linux

just ask them for an ethernet connected modem. the current one should be a motorola SB5101E.

all you need to do then is set up your NIC with dhcp an treat it like any other ethernet interface.

    regards

Telewest agree with you thank god. E-mailed them. Response below:

Thank you for your e-mail dated 24 October 2006.

The installation process does not involve your PC and the installation
engineer will not have to touch/configure your PC at all, So if you are
confident that you can register the broadband with your linux
configuration the installer will just install the modem and leave you to
    register it.

Let's hope it is simple to set up

Nice to hear a reasonable response. I found the same with BT, but Eircom weren't as straightforward. That said there were no problems at all from a technical point of view.

Actually telewest's response has impressed me. For the first time in as long as I can remember I have e-mailed a company and their response did not feel automated and actually answered my question
