How to install gcc without disc
Hi, I am new to this forum and I had tried my best to not to post a thread that is already exist. However there are more than 300 threads
so I have decided to make this new thread and I hope I didnt violate forum rule if I did then I apologize now.
Ok my problem is that when I tried to install a .chm reader for my suse10.0 but it says that no C in the $path and I checked the packages that were installed and noticed that I didn't have any gcc compiler or java source watever, I try to install them but it asks me for CDs and I left it in my uncles house last summer. So my question is I have downloaded the newest gcc4.1.1 and would I be able to install it without my CDs. Btw to install anything on linux you type in ./configure on the terminal and then type "make install" , right? Thanx alot.

Try this
1st
Go to installation source in yast
Dissable CD/DVD
2nd
Add these to your installation source in yast.
HTTP
packman.rsync.zmi.at/suse/10.0
OR:
packman.iu-bremen.de/SUSE/10.0
Then add:
FTP
mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source-java
mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source
mirrors.kernel.org/suse/i386/10.0/SUSE-Linux10.0-GM-Extra
Set everything to refresh except CD.
Click finnish.
Now you don't need the CDs or DVD
Go to software management in yast and install gcc.

Hey, I disabled the installation on cd/dvd. But can't get the 2nd part to work, there are two input boxes: server name and directory. I tried put url that u gave me on both and on one, but is not working. It says "Unable to create Installation source from url 'http:///packman.rsync.zmi.at/suse/10.0'. detail: ERROR(InstSrc:E_noInst_on_media)

It seems like the GCC isn't on the list when I typed in "gcc" in the search box. Also how do you install programs in Linux(suse) anyway. I use /.configure . One last question how/where do u go check for all the stuffs that were installed and is there a way to till which one is useful or not? Since I am running low on memory(only 105mb left)

By the way Goingnuts, the http u gave me doesn't work
maybe I screwed up somehow
I am trying to learn linux using Oreily's .CHM file but suse couldn't recognize it, now before I can install the gnome chm reader I need to install gcc, I am at the point of chaos. -.- Thanx in advance for helping!

well, that's the problem I don't have the CDs anymore. Maybe I didn't install the program in the right way anyway. This is how I tried to install program: First I opened up the folder where the files extracted to and I open a terminal and typed in /.configure <that's the point where it asks me that no c-compiler is found>
