    General Linux Problem?

    I run a

    ASUS A8N-SLI - Motherboard
    AMD 64 3200+ Clawhammer - CPU
    XFX6800XT 256MB PCI-E running in SLI - GPU's
    Maxtor 160GB - HDD
    Western Digital 40GB - HDD
    Lite-On DVD/CD Combo Drive - Optical Drive
    1GB DDR SDRAM - RAM
    17" X2GEN LCD - Monitor

Now originally I had ubuntu work great, then I broke it, mind you I dont know what i did to make it not work but, never could get it to work again.

Then I went with SuSE 10.1 worked great installed fine, rebooted fine, played for some time. Then I tried to install mplayer, restarted, and I get
UPS can not locate Card <----- or something like that

Next I try live SuSE DVD works great, but I have no mouse cursor

I will be trying Gentoo and Fedora next.

NOTE, my problems are graphical in nature weather or not I am running dual GPU's or not in SLI or not, it makes no differance my display always say's out of range or the graphics are all "screwy" <----Official Technical Term

I am hoping I can solve theses minor glitches linux is great, but for noobs its like trying to cure your headache by smashing your finger with a hammer. It can be a real pain but man its worth it cause when you get to the hospital and they hit you with the morphine, your like oh yea smashing my finger was the greatest idea in the world. LOL

sometimes Linux distros couldn't configure Monitor's refresh and sync rates. edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and values supported by Monitor.

    Noob Here!!!!!

How, where, when, do i edit

and is there more to the command?

    /etc/X11/xorg.conf

    Also,

When loading all the distro's I have used I get a vga prompt with F4 and I try each and every resolution and all have the same effect i see massive pixelation and distortion.

Live CD's and DVD's work fine except with SuSE I cant see my mouse cursor.

There are a number of text editors you can use, but I recommend Nano or Pico. Your system should have one of them installed:

    Code:
    su <enter>
Password: <enter root password, then enter>
    nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf <enter>
Change what you want to, then hit CTRL+X to exit and answer "yes" when it asks if you want to save.

The installer should ask for you to set a root password.

Prior to instillation-- uh you would have an unformatted partition? Sorry what do you mean? Like if you can cancelled the install half way or something?

See the problem is the graphics are not being displayed properly so i hit alt+ctrl+backspace or alt+ctrl+f2 to get into console prior to install but i found the answer and it is

    sudo passwd root

that allows you to change the root password prior to install.

OK, finally got SuSE 10.1 installed and running, now the problem is I have to start in failsafe and I had to run

    sax2 -m 0=vesa

to get it to work obviously its a conbination of my monitor and GPU but hey its working so :P

I just gotta get these kinks out but thats half the fun right???? RIGHT??
