Noob trying to figure out RPM dependencies

I just installed SUSE 10.1 on my work laptop so I can start learning linux. The first thing I tried to do was install AMSN using YaST. It popped up saying it requires libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.4).

I thought OK, I will just go download the files I need. Google came up with rpmfind.net and I used it to search for the file. The file named glibc-2.4-31.i686.rpm was what I downloaded.

Now I figure OK, I just install this and it will let me install AMSN. WRONG!! It pops up saying:

    It requires /usr/sbin/glic_post_upgrade
    glibc-locale requires glibc = 2.3.5-

So I am asking you, what do I download now to get these dependencies out of the way so I can start installing AMSN?

Glibc is installed by default on all Linux distros. Avoid overwriting your distros glibc package because you can potentially break some things on your Linux installation. Were you trying to install aMSN from official Suse packages?

I am pretty sure I downloaded the one that was meant for SuSE. Can somebody post a link to the right version for me then so that I can be sure?

So I should never have to install glibc dependencies?

It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I seem to remember that you should be able to right click on an rpm and get yast to install it for you. If you have yast sources set up correctly, then it should resolve all the dependencies for you.

Is there a certain way that I have to setup Yast? The laptop is freshly formatted and AMSN is the first thing I have tried to install. It came up telling me about the dependencies when I try though.

There are instructions for adding Yast sources here, and an even better one here.

Here's a list of other sources you can add, but you don't really need that many.

Ok I went through and updated my Yast with the walk throughs provided. It comes up saying it need other RPM dependencies on 3 or 4 things now. Those updates can't be downloaded due to this.

Also, tried installing AMSN after I did the updates and it still came up with the same dependency pop up.
