    Exclamation XGL help!!

Hi, my experience with Linux can be summaries with a "Linux for dummies" and a couple weeks messing with the OS on my computer. So basically I’m a total noob when it comes to it.

I've seem some videos of Linux XGL, and thought it was really cool, so I decided to do a little reading and find out how i can get it on my system. So I installed the packages with YAST, and when I went to transform it, it said that 3D acceleration was turned off, so I did a little more reading and then installed the drivers.

When I clicked for it to transform and the Log Out screen popped up, I restarted it, and when it restarts it does everything but never gets to the log in screen. It stays at a black screen.

My computer is a Sony Vaio:
Intel Pentium D CPU 3.00 GHz
    2.50 GB RAM
    ATI Radeon X300 (128 mb)

So I don’t know if I did something wrong with the installation, although I followed the steps on the Suse 10.1 wiki site exactly, and it all seems to work fine.

My friend told me to post my problem here. Any help would be appreciated =)

First let me say that setting XGL can be a real hand full and you may want to get more familiar with linux before plunging.

Try this first: at the login run "sax2". You might get lucky and it will run and get you back to your x system.

I went through similiar trials AND tribulations. The first time I followed those instructions you refer to I ended with the same problem. I googled for fixes and in the end I had to reinstall. I then tried again and on my Gnome system I was eventually successfull after more google research.

Frankly though I was not impressed and removed xgl from my system. Lots of eye candy and it's still very much in its infancy.

If a re-install is necessary to make your laptop work correct again, you should have a look a this tutorial: http://www.sugarrave.com/.

Henry made a great tutorial that should work for most of the cards, just follow it word by word. It's pretty user-friendly and it works great! Plus, it gets you the effect you really want with XGL

    Good luck...

I would offer my words of caution though, XGL is notoriously hard to work with ATi Graphics I have found, other people may not think this is the case. However, I would recomend the tutorial above and also http://www.thejemreport.com/mambo/content/view/178 that jem report. It offers a good well rounded tutorial of setting up SuSE with all the multimedia codecs etc, and how to set up XGL on both Nvidia and ATi cards.
