i tried to install "*****X-1.1-final-linux.tar.gz" by folling that link you guys sent me to , after i ran the tar cmd i didnt get any INSTALL files all i have is three executable files "*****X" , "scr-bx" and "wserv". and i dont know what to do from here..

ah yes , you are right, thx. but just out of curiousity what if i didnt have the cd on me and i ran into that problem where it gave me nothing but executable files?
- 11-03-2006 #7Well, it really depends on the maintainers for the program you want. Some folks distribute their source code differently than others. I would recommend that if you're looking for a specific program and you don't have access to the distribution discs, try and find an RPM file for that program. They're a lot easier to install than source, usually.

This is one place were you can find distro specific packages. They go to some lengths to keep you away from rpmhell! http://packman.links2linux.org/
