"Package was not found on the medium" while installing Suse 10.1

    Hi,

    I am fairly new to Linux and I recently aquired a Toshiba Satellite A10, Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.40 Ghz, 496 MB, 60GB, Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2412 DVD/CD-RW .

After torrenting SuSE 10.1, I burnt the ISO with Nero onto a DVD using a different computer and then popped it into the laptop. Everything worked smoothly up until the installation proper. While installing packages I received this error message with title along the lines of package was not found on medium:

Err: 3: Package desktop-data-SuSE-10.1-30 fails integrity check. Do you want to retry downloading it?

Retry doesn't work, while abort and ignore take me to the same place, which is Linuxrc v2.0.46. I tried deselecting several different packages and sometimes I got further in the installation and sometimes not. What's going on and how can I successfully install SuSE onto my laptop?

    Thanks in advance,
    Daniel

Sounds like bad media to me. Try burnning again. Also try the media integrity check at the beginning of the install.

Thanks for your opinion on this one; I wasn't sure if it would be necessary to burn another. I'll give it a try and post how it turned out. Thanks again for your quick help!

To help check the quality of the burned media, the latest SuSE-10.1 "remastered" version, has a quality check of the CDs at one of the first few steps of the installation, where it calculates the MD5 sum. One should then compare that against the MD5 sum on the download web site. Also, before burning, one should also compare the MD5 sum of the .iso file on the hard drive, against the MD5 sum on the download web site.

When burning, it is best to burn to the highest quality media one can find (that is known to be compatible with one's burner and reader(s)). Also burn at the slowest speed possible.

Thank you for the help. There must have been something else amiss in the process, perhaps in the torrented file itself even though it looked pretty official. I ended up making a list of the packages it couldn't find and optioning to not install those packages on the initial os install. So I managed to get it up and running fine, then proceeded to download the missing packages via internet. Luckily in my situation, none of the missing packages were integral to running the actual system.

    Thanks again for your suggestions,
    Daniel

    10.1 is a 64 bit system

it would be hard on pentium 4's to utilize 64 bit on a 32 bit processors. the 10.1 has almost all 64 bit instead of 32 bit installation. So your have to get an AMD 64 Athlon processor motherboard or Intel EMT 64 processor motherboard for your laptop.

You can get 32 or 64 bit versions. 10.1 is not limited to 64 bits

Indeed! Let me add my voice to gogalthorpv noting one can get 32-bit and 64-bit versions for SuSE-10.1 and the statement of phisics is misleading.
