    I need to run some linux equivalant of VPC where I an running an actual win install in a virtual session. Can I do this with VMware??

    Yes.

    I run VMware Server (free) and it is great. One note on installing. It wants to install the VM's on the root partions as default. In general this is your smallest partion and VM's take up a lot of room. I created a partion just for VM's and called it VM (your choise) Or if you have no room for another partion place it in home or some other area with more room
