Wireless problem - driver ok but can't connect

    Hi there,

I've installed a Linksys wireless card (WMP54G) using ndiswrapper and Windows drivers in SuSE 10.0. As far as I can tell, all that went ok, and Linux seems to think it's all ok, but I can not connect to a server or even ping any IP, so something must have gone horribly wrong, but I totally fail to see what. There might be other threads dealing with this issue, and if so, I would appriciate if someone could tell me where, as I've tried searching for a few days now...

Anyhow, I first installed ndiswrapper, then the drivers. The network card uses Ralink RT2500 chipset, so I don't see anything wrong with the drivers:
    linux:/home/liisa # ndiswrapper -l
    Installed drivers:
    rt2500 driver installed, hardware present
It might have something to do with this:
    llinux:/home/liisa # modprobe ndiswrapper
    FATAL: Error inserting ndiswrapper (/lib/modules/2.6.13-15-default/extra/ndiswr
    Operation not permitted
(some text missing there but you get the idea...)

This is what I get for some other commands (and as I don't get a valid IP, I guess that's a part of the problem...):
    linux:/home/liisa # iwconfig
    lo no wireless extensions.
    sit0 no wireless extensions.

where I have replaced some numbers with X's. Ifup says this:
    linux:/home/liisa # ifup ra0
ra0 device: RaLink Ralink RT2500 802.11 Cardbus Reference Card (rev 0
    ra0 configuration: wlan-id-00:12:17:90:ea:7e
DHCP client is already running on ra0
So, I am not really sure what is wrong, and how to fix it. I first thought it was the DNS but since I can't ping others, that can't be it. Would it help if I set up the IP manually? Or should I try installing everything again? There are Linux drivers for this card but I think they're still in beta and since I have ndiswrapper I don't see how this shouldn't work...

    Thanks a lot,
    Liisa

LIISA, did you get any help on this issue or did you resolve the problem? I'm having a similar problem (different hardware) and not having much luck.

Try the iwconfig and modprobe commands from the root.

    Hi,

No I had no luck with it. I've tried with the ndiswrapper and Windows drivers, then with Linux drivers. I got fed up as I was spending a lot of time with this and got nothing else done, so I just put my old network card back in and my flatmates just have to deal with cables going around the house.

    Good luck with yours! =)

    Liisa
