Help booting on 9.2 (I'd like to know what to do when that text thing GRUB pops up)
Hi, I'm pretty new to linux.
My friend gave me his copy of Novell SuSE 9.2 pro. He said he was never going to install it so yeah. I've gone through the Yast instalation, after it is finished installing all of the packages (I think) it says something like "Now starting your system" or "Now booting your system." Then it restarts my computer, and after bootup something called GRUB comes up. It's all text and I have no clue what to do next. I would like to be able to start using it like a normal OS like windows with a desktop, mouse, and all of the programs and games it came with.
Thanks.
I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum, I think I posted it in the right one.??? ?

GRUB is a boot loader used for various operating systems, Linux being one. What text does it say when GRUB shows up? Is there any text on your screen after saying that it is booting your system?

uhm, my reply
It's hard to say.
As for text when grub pops up it says something about typing commands, pressing the tab key for a list of commands. When I press tab it shows a list of commands such as "Blocklist, chainloader, password, etc etc."
I'm sorry if I'm vague. I feel like I first did when I was trying to understand my modified xbox for the first time and had no clue how to use it.
Thanks for trying to help!

I suppose your system booted to BASH like GRUB command line ... let's confirm this and try to boot your system manually

I guess I could save up for a while, I'm 15 and jobless so yeah. haha, I am trying to install it because of GIMP, Openoffice.org's vector drawing program, and a few other programs that are bundled with it.
And what is BASH?
Yes, GRUB is like acting like a command line program like MS DOS and other type programs like that.

boot up from Installation CD and select 'Boot from Harddisk' option. log in as 'root'.
Press Alt+F2 and type 'konsole' in command box.
execute this code in konsole
reboot now !Code:grub-install /dev/hda

I finally got it working, it wants to boot from the wrong partition, thanks though!
I'll do what you did and see if that makes it want to boot from the right partition!
Thanks tons!

in case, problem remains, post the contents of /boot/grub/menu.lst file and output of 'fdisk -l' command. you must be root to execute 'fdisk' command.
