Did you perform a checksum on your DVD? That will verify that your DVD doesn't contain any errors, it could just be a bad DVD.
- 11-25-2006 #3there could be a lot of reasons. bad DVD, unsupported chipset or unsupported BIOS version. in *most* cases, BIOS upgrade solved this problem.

thanku for your reply.i dont think that the dvd is damaged since i installed suse 10.0 on my friend's computer (P-4,915 chipset) with the same dvd and the installation took only less than 20 minutes.
and as far as my motherboard(MB) support is concerned i think it suports fedora, mandriva & suse since my MB driver disk have audio driver(ALSA) for linux.also a readme file is found on the MB cd saying that a boot issue will be there while installing mandriva & suse 10.0 or 9.3.
the issue is same as i had "no installation disk found on the drive".in the readme file a soluton is also given - type "insmod=ide-generic" at the boot option.i tried that too but only difference was a much more colourful bootloader (an animated bootloder with penguins moving on top & bottom).as told in the readme i entered rescue mode with boot option "insmod=ide-generic" but after hardware detection it was told to "enter" to continue and after which a message shown "linux crashed".
in the readme file the reason for the issue is given that the disk cant detect the IDE.
also there is folder in MB driver disk which have some files with ".patch" extension.the names of files are as given
"FC2_2.6.5-1.358.patch"
"FC3_2.6.9-1.667.patch"
"FC4_2.6.11-1.1369_FC4.patch"
"MDK2005_2.6.11-6.patch"
"MDK2006_2.6.12-12mdk.patch"
"SuSE10_2.6.13-15-default.patch"
"SuSE9.3_2.6.11.4-20a.patch"
and it is said to "Patch the Linux IDE driver source file".but i dont know how to do that.
in the readme its is also told that the MB supports Fedora Core 2/3/4, Mandriva 2005/2006 and SuSE 9.3/10.0.
i bought MB in JULY 2006 and the MB is manufactured in JUNE 2006 and so i think no update is required.
while booting from suse 10.0 dvd before the bootloader appears a message is shown
"cool computer but......you are about to install a 32-bit software in 64-bit computer"
earlier i had a 32bit MB & processor in which i worked with suse 9.1,windows xp & windows 98 altogether.i was greatly impressed by the sound clarity and performance of suse 9.1.
thats why i tried to install suse in my new system, but till now i couldnt do that.waiting for your reply.

after "no installation disk found on the drive" message, installer drops you on Manual Installation. Load Modules ---> IDE --> ide-generic. installer will recognize CD. install SuSe.
when Suse reboots after an install, it has to boot through the installed system, but again it won't find the hard disk. so, again go to rescue and load the module.... boot the installed system. your installation will be complete.
now you have to add the ide-generic module to the initrd so that you dont have to load it manually, each time you reboot. open the file /etc/sysconfig/kernel.... search for the terms INITRD_MODULES and add ide-generic in the list of modules. Save and exit. Make a new ram disk by 'mkinitrd'. You will have to specify kernel parameters to mkinitrd if not using the default kernel. man mkinitrd for details. Your Suse installation is done. Reboot and see if you can successfully boot.

after no disk message manual installation started.
i took "add kernel modules-->load IDE/RAID/SCSI modules-->generic * Generic PCI IDE".
then a message was shown "module generic has already been loaded"
i took "start installation system"
than this message was shown"make sure that CD no:1 is in your drive"
on giving OK "unable to mount the CD rom" was shown
i restarted and tried again but the same thing repeated.
- 12-01-2006 #7i *did not* suggest to load generic: Generic PCI IDE.

scroll down the module List. 'ide-generic' is listed below 'generic' module.

thanku casper for ur assistance.installation proceeded to some more steps positively;but still things not working.
like every time after error message manual setup program activated,i selected language & keyboardmap and in the main menu
i took
Kernel Modules (Hardware Drivers)-->Load IDE/RAID/SCSI Modules
-->ide-generic:Generic IDE Host Driver
on pressing enter a message was shown'Enter parameters for"ide-generic".since i had no idea about parameters i just pressed "enter" and it was shown "Loading ide-generic completed succesfully" and screen came back to "load kernel modules"
now i took "back" -->start Installation or System-->start Installation or update-->CD-ROM
now following things were shown
Trying to mount CD ROM
Loading Installation system 65750 KB
(after some 15-20 seconds)
An error occurred during the installation
and the screen went to start installation system page.i pressed down arrow and took "Verify Installation CD ROM or DVD"
then a message came "Insert Installation CD ROM or DVD"
eventhough the disk was still in the drive.Even the "eject cd" option was not working.
i restarted and entered rescue mode with boot option insmod=ide-generic.After hardware detection these were shown
Loading Installation System 62690 KB - 1 %
Linuxrc crashed :-cc
Press Enter to continue
and on pressing "Enter"
Sorry , Linuxrc Crashed at address 0x08067df0
Linux has been restarted in manual mode
was displayed.
i proceeded again as before but still the same issue "couldnot find SUSE Linux Installation CD" occured
also i have noted that this error occurs every time after hardware detection just when "Searching for info file" starts.waiting for your reply

i have already told in my last post that even after loading
"ide-generic:Generic IDE Host Driver"
installation didnt takeplace and when the option
"Verify Installation CD ROM or DVD"
gave message "Insert Installation CD ROM or DVD"
and on pressing "OK"
this was shown "this is not a Suse Linux CD-ROM"(eventhough i installed suse on my friend's PC with the same disk)
evenif the verification test is skipped installation is not taking place.
