I have been trying out several different package managers (smart, yast, zmd (aka rug)). Smart is so far the easiest, fastest, and least likely to complain! rug (zmd) is by far the most annoying, hardest to use, and complete crap! I decided to uninstall zmd, rug and some of their dependencies (one's which [hopefully] won't complicate the rest of my OS, or cause any future problems)

I am interested in getting the suse's native package manager to work successfully, but, of course as many of you know, this isn't exactly easy.

I have so far added just 3 sources to yast via "installation sources" GUI:
suse update
guru
packman

Every time I run "software management" or "installation sources" it takes a very long time for the programs to load. Obviously a 56k 'net connection doesn't help here, but this is precisely why I'm posting this. I could just set all 3 sources to "refresh=OFF" but then I would be stuck having outdated sources all the time. In order to set "refresh=ON" I would need to open "installation sources" and change the flags, and then exit, and then open "software management" (which would take a long time), install/upgrade/remove as required, then close, then open "installation sources" again (which would take a long time) and set flag to "refresh=OFF" and then close. Without resorting to rug (zmd) and without having to 'beat around the bush' to get sources refreshed, what would some of you guys recommend that I do? Please, only yast solutions (smart et al I already have installed/tried as I noted above), Also, I'm working V.E.R.Y. hard to try to get at least 2Mibps 'net connection, this dial-up is absolutely killing me. Also, is there a way to prevent sources from updating each time I run "installation sources" via yast (aside from "refresh=OFF")?
