Question SuSE 10.1 Install on Emachine 2240 SLOOOOOWWWW

I'm trying to install SuSE 10.1 on an Emachines 2240 that was "donated" to me. I'm not a newbie but this is driving me nuts.

The partitioning and hard disk prep are taking FOREVER... I can see the CD light flashing even though there should be no activity on it during this phase. It looks like some process is looping and eating the cpu cycles. I tried all the Installation options on the Install menu with no difference.

Any Ideas out there (besides avoiding emachines)???

    Thanks...

    Cool Ain't the CD

    The mystery deepens.

    It ain't the CD. That's a 56x'er.

The process was at the point of manually setting the partitions on the HD so there should have been no CD activity anyway.

BUT... I grabbed a copy of my old SuSE 8.2 CD's and the install runs just fine.

    Beats me...

    1. Is the media that you burnt ok? Did you check it?

    2. How much ram does this system have?

    3. Maybe try swapping CD rom drives. Also how is the CD drive hooked up?
On the same IDE cable with another CD rom drive? If so that could be causing problems.

    4. Is the hard drive ok? I have had drives that was going bad before running really slow.

SuSE 8.2 pretty much loads. Got other problems not related to speed. So...
    1. media is fine. checked it.
2.Got enough ram. Don't need much to install anyway. Doesn't explain the cd activity, in any event.
    3. CD rom is fine under XP and installs 8.2.
    4. HD is fine.

I think it has to do with emachine architecture. Oh, well. Keeping me off the streets at night.

I really hate these freakin' things...

Did you check the disks with md5sum or just by glancing at the contents?
