    Solution

    1. Select a file its extension you want to be associated with Mplayer (e.g "Stormbirds.avi")
    2. Right- click and select Open with...
    3. Find Mplayer in menus and click on the icon
    4. Check the box " Remember application for this extension" or similar.
    5. Wait and !

This can be done for other filetypes too!

Whoops! I didn't realize you wanted to do It with an internet file!!!
I thin that can be done with KMenu/Control Center/ KDEComponents / FIle associations.
You can here associate different applications with the file types you want ! I'm not sure.
