Software driver Conexant DSL USB modem.

Linux SUSE 10 driver for a Conexant DSL USB modem.
Yast is recognising the modem as an ADSL USB modem even with the driver for it (cxacru driver), however Linux does not give me the option to install it under the Internet connections. How do/can I get around that problem???
When there is a driver how can I get it installed?

We'll need some extra information. Specifically, what model of modem is it, and who is your ISP. Anything else you know like do they use PPP over ethernet (PPPoE) or PPP over ATA (PPPoA) would be helpful.

The ISP bit is important because they can set up the connections in a few different ways which will affect how you set up your box.

    Fight with Modem.

I will try to answer your questions as much as possible.
The Microsoft XP driver S/W Version: 28072.099.085.000
    The Server type: PPP
    Transports: TCP/IP
    Authentication: PAP
The ISP is Internet Solutions in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Modem model is Mecer ADSL USB Modem. (According to the Manual)
Mecer is a South African computer whole sale company.
The type of dial-up in Windows is PPP: Windows 95/98/NT4/2000, Internet
The connection types of the modem possible, according to the manual, are:
    PPP over ATM VCMUX (RFC2364)
PPP over ATM LLC (RFC 2364)
PPP over Ethernet VCMUX (RFC 2516)
PPP over Ethernet LLCSNAP (RFC 2516)
The set-up for the connection I can contact Internet Solutions. Which one do you recommend?

This is what is under Yast, hardware configuration:
    USB 00.0: 0000 Unclassified device
    [Created at usb.122]
    UD I: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/us b_device_5 72_cbOO_082 98061_ifO
    Unique ID: 2UT6.Ar8ZwcNd584
    Parent ID: k4bc.AuwrOlly2j9
    SysFS ID: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:0b.0/usb1/1-3/1-3:1.0
    SysFS BuslD: 1-3:1.0
    Hardware Class: unknown
Model: "Conexant Systems (Rockwell) ADSL USB MODEM"
    Hotplug: USB
Vendor: usb 0x0572 "Conexant Systems (Rockwell), Inc."
Device: usb 0xcb00 "ADSL USB MODEM"
    Revision: "0.01"
    Serial ID: "08298061"
    Driver: "cxacru"
    Speed: 12 Mbps
    Module Alias: "usb:v0572pCB00d0001dc00dsc00dp00ic00isc00ip00 "
    Driver Info #0:
    Driver Status: cxacru is active
    Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe cxacru"
    Config Status: cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown
    Attached to: #61 (Hub)

Shown in the above it to me looks like Yast is recognising the modem but how can I connect it to the Internet? ? Yast does not give me the/an option? ? ?
    Thanks from Jan, South Africa.

There was some useful information in there, but we will need some more.

In the meantime. It seems Macer don't do there own ISP but have a branded service from Branded Internet. Technical details seem to be a bit thin on the ground.

Assuming Suse has chosen the right driver the config file you are after is /etc/cxacru. The command to actually start the connection is /usr/sbin/cxstart.sh.

You'll need to get onto Macer tech support to find out a couple of details. Specifically the VPI, the VCI and the protocol. There is a thread about setting it up (on Ubuntu but it should be similar) here.

It might also be worth having a peek at www.linux.org.za. They have a mailing list and they are local so you might be able to get some help there too.

Still trying to get the USB ADSL Modem to work

I really think to give up on this Conexant ADSL USB modem. Where do I get a SUSE "cxstart.sh"

I get the impression that it will be easier to buy a D-Link Broadband Router.
What is you opinion on that?

On what web-site do I get easy instructions how to use SUSE Linux? Most of the web-sites asume a sertain understanding of Linux and it starts to frustrate me. I even bought the Suse Linux Bible. That book has the same problem that they asume that one knows the basic about linux.

    Rgrds Jan.

There ought to be a cxacru<somthing>.rpm file on the installation media. Installing that (rpm -i <filename>) should supply the cxstart.sh file. Mount the install CDs one by one and try the following command to search for it.

    Code:
    find -name "cxacru*"
A broadband router would probably be much easier, and it comes with the bonus of if you pull out suse and try something else then at least your internet connection will always be available.

I'm afraid I don't know anything about Suse in particular, so I can't suggest a book for you. If you can work out what it is you need to know, then just ask and we will see if we can help you.
