    How to Change Screen Resolution?

    Hi,

I installed Suse Linux 10 Desktop. Everything went on fine but when coming up, the system went blank and the monitor now displays change screen resolution, monitor does not support such frequencies.

    What to do?

Though I can login using Failsafe then I can login using root or any other user.

What steps are to be taken so that I can change the resolution?

    Any help will be great.

Boot to run level 3. Do this by typing "level 3" in the grub "boot options" during a regular boot. Log in as a regular user. Please, do not log in as root. That is almost always a very bad idea.

Once logged in as a regular user, type "su" to get root permissions (for a short time). Then type "sax2" and go change your resolution. Test it. And then exit sax2. If sax2 wouldn't run, try sax2 with a vesa driver via "sax2 -m 0=vesa" (that is zero equals vesa).

Once you have exited sax2, type "exit" to get rid of root permissions. This is important. Don't forget. Then type "whoami" to confirm you no longer have root permissions.

Then type "startx" to check out xwindows. If KDE, Gnome, (or whatever desktop you are using) comes up, then exit immediately. Once back at a text prompt, type "su" to get root permissions, followed by "shutdown -r now" to reboot with your current settings. During the reboot do NOT type "level 3" in the boot options. It should reboot direct to your loggin and/or to xwindows.

    Good luck.

Please, next time provide some information on your hardware. I made some assumptions on your hardware that could be wrong, because you didn't provide information on your graphic card, nor your graphic chipset.

    Hi,

I only see two options when I boot my system --> Suse Linux and Failsafe mode, where should I type level 3. you have mentioned that Boot to run level 3 and that can be done by typing "level 3" in the grub "boot options" during a regular boot.

But while regular boot option, I can't see any place where to type level 3.

My Monitor is a latest HP 7540.

    Please advice.

    Saabir.

It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
