What is format of downloaded Thunderbird package? SuSe supports .rpm packages and you can't unzip rpm package.
Thunderbird is available in Installation CD/DVD. install it through Yast.

It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

in Yast Software Management, type 'thunderbird' in search box. select it and click on install. Yast will ask for installation # CD having Thunderbird.
