Suse setup problems
Couple of questions if someone can please help.
I have just installed SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 from a dvd I was given. I have managed to find and somehow install Kinternet and get online with dialup. It has installed the gnome desktop.
1. I would like to know where the repositories located are for the necessary RPM files (I cant find thunderbird on the dvd or at least Yast cant find it) and the commands to install them when they are downloaded. Also dont know where the sources.lst is located for the repositories
2. I can play an MP3 file but not a DVD movie and obviously need the codecs in RPM format.
3. Does someone know the code to make nautilus root so I can edit fstab and other conf files. And how to turn root off after the adjustments.
4. I have made a seperate partition to store files in FAT32 but cant seem to get Suse to either mount it or accept the code I placed in Fstab. It is hda3 and the swap is on hda1 and Suse on hda2. I have been trying code I used in Ubuntu but obviously there are errors there in respect to Suse.
5. Suse is very slow to start, have I stuffed up the installation somehow or are there tricks to speed up the start process.
6. Yast says there are no updates but I find that strange and have probably not set up automatic downloads or repositories correctly.
Can u advise there please.
apologies for the long winded questions. Hope I havnt worn out my welcome with Suse to start with.

I guess Novell, Microsoft and Questions was a bad combination and did wear out my welcome before I started.

Alright, I'll give it a shot
1. Try using Smart. You'll have better luck installing software.
2. The file you'll need is libdvdcss2. Pretty sure you can get it with Smart.
3. This is a feature that, AFAIK, has not yet been integrated in to Nautilus, which is a shame because KDE's file browser has it and it is very useful. Oh well, maybe in future versions.
4. What is the line in fstab you used with Ubuntu? You're using vfat as the file system type, correct?
5. Disabling services/processes you don't need is one place to start. Haven't used SuSE in a while but there should be a way to do it somewhere in Yast.
6. Don't know exactly what the problem would be here. I guess it would depend on what software you already have installed. But again, I think getting Smart set up would be the best place to start. Might clear up this problem for you.

Hi Thrillhouse,
Many thanks for your reply. I will have a go at installing SMART and follow up from there. I am still feeling my way around Suse at the moement and trying to re-invent the wheel.
