Let me get a magic wand
Oooops I forgot, I do not have a magic wand. I can help a little bit though:
What version is the OS 64bit or 32?
What hardware are you using? (CPU, MOBO, Chipset, IDE or SATA?)
Did you check for BIOS problems?
Did you run any hardware diagnostics (mem, HD, CPU, mobo?)
If you purchased your distrubution it may have support. Novell offers 90 days of limited support. Did you check hte HCL (hardware compatability list) for your hardware?
I was having problems with the 64-bit version of 10.1 but went to the 32-bit version and the strange shutdown issues I was having stopped.
I wont be able to solve the issue, someone might have the right answer with the information you presented but more info might help.

Hi Chris,
Sorry, I cant give you a "for sure" answer to the issue just some bits and pieces:
-I have read that Suse 10.1 drops support for older hardware so you may be out of luck. (Something to be said for Windows is that hardware is usually a non-issue).
-If you have 2 different supposedly identical "tested OK" distribution CDs and both give you different errors then your hardware is the problem. I know the other version of Linux works but it may have not uncovered the error. I had a similar problem with Windows years ago; it installed fine but would fail while installing other programs. Are the DVDs the same?
-You bought the Suse distribution. Is it an official version that comes with support?
-It sounds like there is an unfamiliarity with your hardware. "dell latitude c600" does not say much at all. Do research and find out what your components actually are.....on the other hand you might get lucky and find someone else who installed on your exact same system who can help.
Sorry that I am all questions and no real answers. As you will see by my next post I am not doing much better than you when it comes to understanding this distro.
Stuntman.
