I always recommend a "clean install", as opposed to an update/upgrade. But before any such install, I recommend one backup their /home directory, and make back up copies (and indeed print outs) of /etc/fstab, /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and also of any files in /etc/modprobe.d.
For the /home directory, in particular ensure one has copies of ones bookmarks.html.
Edit: Note that after SuSE-10.0, there was a significant shift in Novell/SuSE policy wrt to drivers. If a driver is NOT open source, then it is no longer included with Novell/SuSE-10.1 nor 10.2. This includes the madwifi driver, ati graphic driver, nvidia graphic driver, ... etc ... So it is possible that after such an install, you could have some problems with wireless, graphics, etc ... until you find either an open source driver that works, or until you download from your hardware suppliers web site the custom driver, and install said driver (assuming it is even availble).
