Display problem with SuSE since 8.1.
Hi
Since SuSE 8.1 or thereabouts I have had problems, first installing because even in text mode the text was unreadable. It got better as new distro's were released and yesterday I installed SuSE 10.2, in text mode, it wouldn't have it in graphics mode.
All up and running with the KDE desktop this is the problem. After running for a while, maybe minutes or hours, text in applications and on the screen, icons, the mouse pointer become totally unreadable and this has happened since version 8.1 and I have reverted to Slackware and other distros which don't have the problem.
Had a brainwave today and reconfigured X with parameters I know work with every other distribution I use. I am waiting with fingers crossed to see if it has done the trick!
My box is a Dell Dimension 2400 with an ET 172 FPi monitor, which I describe in the config file as a 1280x1024 laptop display.
If that isn't the cure and anyone knows different I would be greatfull if they tell me the answer.

did you try configuring display through 'sax2' command in Single user command line mode?

No I didn't, sort most stuff out in a console rather than a GUI, but if this fails again I certainly will. I just did a bog standard xorgconfig in a console and wait to see if it works.
Thank you for your comment but it does not answer why since about 8.1 I have had a problem with resolution of text when installing. Fedora Core and a few others install without problem, SuSE has been an absolute pig before I get to a GUI.
I guess it's a problem with my Dell box.
BTW the default config was created by Sax.

SuSe assign wrong HorizSync and VertRefresh rates for a few type of Monitors. this might be the problem. check these rates in xorg.conf file and compare with Monitor's Manual.

Guess you may be right, time will tell, I will post and let you know.
Having used Slackware for about 12 years I have a little understaning of the nuts and bolts. If it works then I got my config right.
Unfortunately no parameters were supplied when I bought the box and no manual on them.

okk ! do let me know how it goes... generic refresh rates are
Code:HorizSync 31.5-57.0 VertRefresh 50.0-70.0
Good Luck !

They are low compared with what I normally use.
Having done a manual X config it's still up and running this morning so I guess it's sorted. So simple when the answer dawns.
Thanks again.
