Make sure on-board sound is enabled in the BIOS of your motherboard.

Using the Yast control center, go to hardware --> sound and check if your sound card is listed. If it is, then you should run the configuration.

Try this from the console as root:

    > /etc/init.d/alsasound stop
    > alsaconf

the kernel module snd-intel8x0 for audio support could't load.
this is caused by incorrect module parameters, including unvalid IO or irq-parameters

Yeah, I've been getting the same problem with my sound card occasionally (except my sound module is snd_emu10k1, but the error message is exactly the same).

My sound works sometimes and other times not (using ALSA). I'm new to Linux too and I posted here twice about this problem, but no one seems to have a solution. So I tried some stuff: you could switch to OSS (open sound system) instead and see what happens. Before you do that though, try downloading the latest version of ALSA and run alsaconf again (BTW, did you get any error messages from alsaconf the 1st time?)
