    New monitor

    I have SUSE 10.1 and I just purchased a new monitor. A Dell 2407FPW widescreen monitor capable of 1920x1200 resolution. When I installed SUSE it identified my old monitor so when I go into Control Center and check display it has listed the monitor I did have. I looked for my new monitor, but of course it is not listed. I would like to use the higher resolutions that my new monitor can produce, how can I make it work? I tried using something that looked close, but the display went black and the monitor said the refresh rate was incorrect.

    Instead of using Contol Center I'd advise you boot into a runlevel 3 or killoff X from your desktop, then su to root and tell sax to reconfigure your gfx hardware. With any luck your monitor will be autodetected and setup on the fly. If not, you can always just enter the display size and sync/refresh specs in the xorg.conf file yourself. These values will be on the monitor's installCD or you can grab them from the web via a quick keyword search.

    If all else fails then boot a recent KnoppixCD and transfer over its relevant xorg.conf data on the monitor detection to your HD install.

    $ su
    # sax2 -r
