http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_package_repository

Reference Smart, the version of Smart that is packaged by Novell/SuSE (and that comes with your installation CD/DVD for SuSE-10.1 and 10.2) does not have many repositories. On the other hand, the best packaged version of Smart to use for SuSE is likely the one packaged by Guru, because it already has some important repositories included. Plus Guru's packaged Smart is a newer version.
I find the easiest way to install Guru's packaged Smart is to first:
a. install the Novell/SuSE smart,
b. download Guru's smart to your /home/username directory
c. use Novell/SuSE smart to install your Guru Smart,
d. update your Guru Smart.
All done via the command line.
ie get Guru's packaged smart from here. Lets say it is: smart-0.49.1-10.guru.suse101.i686.rpm
http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/rpm-naviga...t=/System/smart
Then download that to your hard drive to /home/username directory. And lets assume you already have Novell/SuSE smart installed. Then you simply open a konsole and type:
su (enter root password when prompted)
smart install smart-0.49.1-10.guru.suse101.i686.rpm
smart update (select Y to the various repositories)
smart install rpmkey*
smart install smart-gui
SuSEconfig
ldconfig
smart --gui
Once you have Guru's smart up and running, I recommend you then locate mirror sites (ie mirror repositories) that you can add to Smart, such that it doesn't slow down too much when accessing any one particular site/repository (such as Packman's site, which is very popular, and can be very slow to access from, if one does not have their mirrors setup).

thought you might like this
YaST2 is a fairly complete and competent tool for administering a SUSE
Linux installation. It allows administrators to install software,
configure hardware, setup networks and servers and more.
Make sure you have createrepo installed.
To make your own repositories, type the command:
# createrepo
For example if /opt/packages is your directory, type the command:
# createrepo /opt/packages

Clearly a problem you have is you don't have the rpmkey installed.
The command:
"smart install rpmkey*" did not appear to have found nor installed any keys. It should have. But I notice why you typed "smart update" you didn't get an update (no new packages available). Are you certain you were on the Internet when you typed that?
Do you have Guru's Smart installed? Please try again (in a konsole, with root permissions):
rpm -q smart
Also, once you confirm you have Guru's packaged smart, try again (in a konsole with root permissions):
smart update
smart install rpmkey*
and be certain you are on the internet when you type this.

i think the problem is with smart update. it does not compeletly update. that why smart install rpmkey* does't found. am i right?. My computer is on LAN and to connect to internet i need proxy. That time the proxy was working fine. The problem is with proxy there are certain restrictions ie, i can not download a file of more than 100MB, maximum speed limit on ip is 4 kb/s, it varies and torrent is not allowed. I do not know how to by-pass the proxy or to cross it. At server the internet speed is 1MB/s and it distributed amoung many people. if you know how i will break the limit tell me. Then i think it is possible that smart update command works.
- 12-21-2006 #8This reads like a major limitation to me. You risk running into time out errors. Once you get your Smart working, you may need to take notes, and breakup your Smart installations into small pieces.

- 12-21-2006 #10By having a proxy, your life is going to be more difficult, than those of us who don't have a proxy. If you want to work behind a proxy, IMHO you should take the time to study the guide by Linux_Learner (starting with the URL that I provided), and work out how to setup your proxy.

Then open a konsole and type:
sudo rpm -Uvh rpmkey-packman-0.3.2-0.pm.1.noarch.rpm (enter the root password when prompted)
Now try installing your apps (from Packman) again with Smart.
As in interim, to get around the rpmkey issue with Guru's site, type the following:
sudo rpm --import http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/guru-rpm.asc
Note, after installing various apps with the rpm command and/or Smart, before you finish, don't forget to type (with root permissions):
SuSEconfig
ldconfig
The above will get you two rpm keys, but you really need to sort out your proxy, as it will keep giving you problems..
