SUSE cannot communicate with my printer

Used my oldest of four XP comps (with this printer working fine) to try out Linux flavors. Zeroed out the hd with debug; did a fresh install for each one.

    Linspire first - printer okay
    Ubuntu next - printer okay

SUSE 10.2 was just done today. Strong featured OS; everything working well except two things; the most important of which is the printer. If I can't get this to work, SUSE is dumped -NEVER to be seen again.

When first in the business, I cut my teeth on hundreds of Novell networks. Great system - much better than NT. So, I had visions of a happy marriage with SUSE.

Went through the checksum thing at install (as well as the verify at burn). All 6 cd's okay.

It's an HP Lj 5mp on lpt1 - KNOWN GOOD; always on. Using YaST, upon testing the connection, cannot find the printer. Used Local Printer on Parallel Port. I'm dead right there. Can't even continue.

Hooked the printer up to my other three units (with the same cable) - works fine!!!

    Ideas????

Why don't you see if it will work using CUPS. Whenever I have printer issues using a distros built-in print config I turn to CUPS. In fact that's all I use any more. If you havn't already it's worth a shot: localhost:631. And if you can't find a driver that works you can almost always find a ppd file at linuxprinting.org that will likely solve the problem.

    Hope you have success there.

I installed cups & gutenprint drivers to the printer inside of YaST, but the attempt at a test page didn't work. SUSE is not communicating with my parallel port.

I'm very sorry, but I didn't have a clue at first as to what you meant by localhost:631. But an educated guess was to type it into the Firefox address bar.

Lo, and behold - CUPS utopia appeared. Very intuitive; I followed the prompts, and my printer was activated - test page and all!

    Thank you very much!
