The SUSE installation disk will find your external drive as long as it is working. However I would recommend that before installing you study up on partitioning disks if you are not already familiar with how partitioning works. During the installation you will be given the option to either accept SUSE's recommended partitioning scheme or do it manually. Since you are going to be dual booting with XP you should be cautious how you do this. Normally all will go well but not if you make a mistake in how you partition, so consider backing up any XP data just in case.

I suggest that you take the installation steps slowly and if you are not comfortable with something and if you have another pc handy then look it up on Google or here on the forum. Keep in mind thar Linux is NOT Windows and you should be looking forward to learning new ways of doing things.

    hi ron,
    thanks for the reply.
During the installation, although there were various other options, there wasnt an option to partician onto the external hard drive.
    Why wasnt it recognised?
