Can't get good 2nd monitor display in Suse 10.2
I just upgraded from Suse 10.0 to Suse 10.2, and I can't get my second monitor working properly.
I'm using an IBM ThinkPad T43 laptop (1400x1050 resolution) with an ATI radeon video card, and have an external Hitachi CM721F monitor. That monitor does not show up in the list of monitors under Yast->Hardware->Graphics Card and Monitors->[SaX2:]dual monitors->Configure...
No matter what monitor or resolution I choose from the list, the second monitor displays a readable display, but it flickers and is bulged in the middle and would give me a headache in 2 minutes if I left it there. Ick.
The odd thing is that when I click "Test", both screens go blank, and for a few seconds I have an X-Windows "X" cursor that appears to be just fine on both monitors. But then the new resolution kicks in and everything's ugly again. Not sure why it can't just stay nice like it was in-between there.
How does a Mac or Windows system magically know what refresh rates and resolutions a monitor supports? Has anyone been able to pull the same thing off in Linux?
If not, what do I need to do to get this monitor usable again?
