Enabled 3D acceleration, no X windows anymore!!!

    Hi,
I'm new to SUSE 10.2 64-bit and, after my install, I enabled 3D acceleration in my hardware display settings, using a checkbox, and saved. I later rebooted, the system posted, went to grub and then the SUSE blue splash screen. After a few seconds, the monitor screen went blank.
I can get into safe-mode and all the partitions and filesystems are OK. I have an ATI (I know, I know...) Radeon 9200 SE Rev 280 on an Asus K8V SE mobo w/ an AMD 64 3000+ chip. I do believe X is utilizing the "radeon" driver, which I have since found may not support 3D acceleration!!
One other thing, during install, I had to use another (Sceptre Dragoneye 17" CRT) monitor because my Samsung 205bw 20" TFT said it needed a res of 1680 x 1050 @ 60hz. After installing, I switched monitors and the Samsung was detected and working perfectly!!
I had rebooted the system several times after install and never had an issue until I enabled the 3D acceleration. I need to know how I can rectify this situation from the command line in safe-mode, if at all possible. Or do I need to start over and re-install the OS. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Thanks in advance,
    beowulf62

To disable 3d as root run sax2.

Did you install the ATI drivers. They do not ship with the OS you must get them from ATI and follow their instructions.

    Good to go..............

First off, thanks! I am back up and running! Unfortunately, I had seen that command but had no idea what it did, probably the easiest X configuration fix I've ever used!
To answer your question, no I have not installed the ATI driver, but I will. By any chance, is the 9200 SE old enough to work with accelerated graphics under X 7.02? I have seen that some newer ATI cards would not work in 3D under X 7.02, but no specific models were listed.
Also, is there some links to thorough documentation for openSUSE 10.2, by any chance???

    Thanks a million,

AFAIK the generic X system drivers do not support 3D. In fact I'm supprised you could even select it.

Sorry, I'm still running 10.1 and have a NIVIDA card.

Yes sax2 is the easiest config program your likely to run accross
It's what runs whae you first install and also in Yast when you config your card. It also runs from the command line.
