Disaster installing nvidia drivers on AMD64 SuSE10.1
I tried following these instructions to install the driver for my EVGA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card, but when I reboot I can't get the X server to start.
I tried "startx" from a root login, but I got an error,I checked that the file ..../nvidia.ko exists, and it does.Code:FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.16.21-0.25-smp/weak-updates/nvidia.ko): No such device
Can anyone tell me how to either,
- Fix the problem so that my nvidia driver works, or,
- Roll back the changes so I can go back to a working operating system without having to reinstall.

Never mind.
After a lot of hunting around on google, I remembered that there were two methods described on the nvidia site I linked to in my previous post -- a recommended one, and a more difficult one. I (of course) had tried the recommended one, so I went back and had a go at the difficult version, and it worked like a dream!!
I wonder why the recommended route doesn't work (seemingly for a lot of people), while the "difficult" method works like a charm (I only had to type two commands!)?Registered Linux user #388328 || Registered LFS user #15880

Not sure this'll help anyone, but it posts are free...
I had some trouble with the most recent version of the nvidia drivers and had to bump back one version. The boingy window are awesome!
My notes are at work, but I think I had to download the drivers from another machine (with a graphics system/browser that worked), scp the file over, then install it. If I remember right, I had to do an init 3, install, then init 5.
Hope this helps someone...
