Problem Dual booting on laptop.
Hello
Iv got a problem, im currently dual booting Windows XP and Linux on my laptop.
Windows XP is installed on the laptops internal harddrive while OpenSuse 10.2 is installed to a external harddrive, im using grub to dual boot from the MBR of the internal harddrive.
The problem is i need windows to be able to boot without the USB external drive plugged in but when i try this i get an Error from Grub "Error 5".
I take it this is because there are files used by grub on the external drive?
Any ideas on what i can do to get round this.
Iv also tryed installing grub on the /boot partition of the external harddrive however when i try and boot from the external drive im told there is no boot sector.

first of all remove grub from internal harddisk.
boot up from Windows Installation CD, select 'repair' and execute 'fixmbr'.
plug-in External Harddisk and boot up from SuSe installation CD/DVD and select 'Installation' option. select Upgrade in next screen. in Boot Loader section, select 'install in MBR of /dev/hdb'. click on next, next ...
select External disk as 'first boot device' in BIOS.
in case, it doesn't work, boot up SuSe through Installation CD/DVD, select Boot from HardDisk and execute 'fdisk -l' in terminal/konsole. post output here.
CasperIt is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
