monitor goes black with one bar of white with suse 10.2

I have a dell inspiron 5150 with 512mb of ram and a 32mb video card. Everything goes fine until i get to the last step were it shows you the configurations for the monitor and the resolution. What happens is that if i hit the next button the screen will go black with a white bar, or it will go black, i have tried changing to a vesa driver and also i have tried a lower resolution. Also suse 10.0 works fine with my laptop.

    thanks,

    DP

try choosing a generic monitor instead of the default monitor SUSE chooses.

I have tried using several different monitors, including the ones under the dell selection that are listed as laptop monitors, also i tried using the generic lcd selection. With each different monitor i selected i got the same results.

strange... is there any way you could look in 10.0's xorg.conf and grab the monitor details from there? Also is there any logfile or error file which is created, if there is, then could you post it? Also what graphics card do you have?

Ok the suse 10.0 use vesa frame buffer for my video card, the video card that shows up when i install 10.2 is a XGI Volari XP5 which is what windows uses. Also the monitor that 10.0 uses is the same one that 10.2 detects. I'm now wondering if it has to do with the video card and maybe the drivers for it in 10.2 since 10.0 is using the vesa driver. Right now i have been able to get it running by reinstalling 10.0 and then using the update method when installing 10.2 but i would like to figure out whats going on so that in the future i can install 10.2 without a problem as i think the update method screws with the performance. Just like in windows where its better to do a fresh install instead of a update.

Hmm, looks like that card is based on a Trident chip. Perhaps you could try a different Trident driver or maybe tryout vesa + less than 1024x768 resolution for time being.

Also, did you install XGL + compiz in 10.2? If so, try installing without those.

    @ vista2006useer,
    1. boot into failsafe mode
    2. login as root
    3. run sax2
    4. configure the monitor
    5. try not to hijack threads in future

    vista2006useer,
when your computer turns on what happens? Do you get a screen which allows you to choose which OS to boot? If that screen comes up, select Failsafe. Then follow my previous post.
