Can I get my SuSe 10.0 to play DVD's ?

I guess this has been posted over and over again but I can't find a previous thread dealing with this question, so apologies to the moderators if this is a repeat posting.

I've installed SuSe 10.0 from a book I bought call "SuSe Linux 10.0 for Dummies", because been a newbie for over 2 years makes me a bit of a dummy! But the book just says you can't play DVD's in SuSe or any other Linux platform which is not true because all my other Linux installs (see Avatar for details) will play DVD's.

I found a blog that gave instructions to set up the installation source as 'packman' but the details might be out of date as the souce is not accepted. So what I'm looking for, if possible, is step by step instructions as to how I can get SuSE 10.0 to play DVD's (it must be possible!).

Thanks in advance & happy New Year to everyone on this forum.

    Martin

PS: I can't upgrade to 10.1 or 10.2 as the RAM in my machine is 256, you need 512 for the later releases, so that is not an option.

EDIT: I have 10.2 now running in a seperate partition with 3D disabled, but it's not so flexible maybe as it's a community release

Welcome to SuSE! The link below is old, but the instructions are pretty good and they are specific to 10.0:

The link for Packman in the article above is no-good. Look here for a working link to Packman repo and others:

Did you search the forum for "video" "kaffeine" or "mplayer"? These keywords usually provide a lot of useful info. Good Luck and Happy New Year!

    Thanks all-got it working!

First I updated the respositories but had to get an extra command line entry from the net before packman was accepted as a new source. I then downloaded the new Kaffeine but had to agree to risking inconsistancies before it would continue, then I downloaded the RPMs for the LIBDVDCSS and Win32Codecs. A quick logout and back in again and we were up and runing! I did, however, get a notification that YaST had detected some inconsistancies in the system but besides the occasional oddity on the desktop on boot-up, which disappears if you log out and back in, everything looks okay.

    So thanks again evryone!

Usually if you install or upgrade applications, you do not need to logout of the system. Obviously if you are upgrading KDE, GNOME or the likes of XFCE, then its a good idea to logout and back in again, but for most apps its not necessary.
