    Suse 10.2 shutdown

Hi, this was my first install linux and i'm not sure where i have gone wrong. I've been running Xp on my machine without a problem and have checked both my memory and stressed the system(in Xp).

The problem i have is the install seems to have gone fine but when the system try's to load the KDE GUI the computer shuts down. If i select Suse 10.2 (safe Mode) and boot to the console screen i don't have a problem. I originaly installed
Linux to make use of the SMP program for folding and have installed this and the computer is folding away happily. I presume that there is a problem with the graphics driver thats causing the system to shut down.

    MY system is:

    MSI K8N Master 2 Far
    2 x Opteron 285's
    2 Gb Corsair Ram
    x1950 Pro graphics card

    Any help is appreciated.

    Sean

my best guess would be a graphic card problem since u have a lot of ram. x1950 is an ATI card am i right?
Linux has had problems with ati drivers since the dawn of time. use a standard driver like vesa and see. u can use sax2 in safe mode or sax in init level 3 to do this.

    Cheers

    Problem solved.

I've disabled ACPI in Bios and now the system boots into the KDE Gui.

I'm not sure if thsi was the correct course of action but its got me working again.

The system has a hard shutdown when either booting into the KDE Gui or when startx was typed in the console. Once ACPI was disabled i have no problems.
